Moscow Zoo



How would you like to amuse yourself while travelling in Moscow? What about visiting the biggest Zoo in Russia, that includes more that 7000 animals and more than 1000 species. Come and increase your general knowledge on animals and other creatures with an outing to see the "other side of life!"

It is also the oldest zoo and was started in 1864. It was founded by professors of biology from Moscow State University. It was a small garden that was evolved into the huge educational and scientific institution.

It is an interesting fact that right from the beginning, it became very popular among Moscow residents. That is why it was well supported by donations and charitable gifts even from the Royal family.

After the revolution, the Zoo was somewhat damaged during a battle and was later nationalized. The new authorities favored retaining the Zoo, so its grounds were doubled and the number of animals increased.

The latest reconstruction of the Zoo took place during the 1990s, and was completed in 1997. Today’s unique Zoo collection numbers over 7,000 species. You may observe these animals at close quarters by looking through barred cages and in special pavilions designed according to the animals natural habitats. You will be shown The Animal Island of 30s of 20th century which is very popular with all the visitors. You can relax, as you see the high rock surrounded by water that separates the people from these efficient predators. On your walk round the zoo, you will also be shown numerous species of monkeys.

The Night World exhibition is also worth visiting, where it is possible to see nocturnal animals that normally sleep/hide during daylight, and it is possible to see animals them even if they are asleep.

The Moscow Zoo also features an Aquarium. It is gigantic, with more than 3,000 liters of water, where you can gaze at some of the world’s most exotic fish and creatures of the oceans and seas. Landscapes of the ‘seabeds’ or ‘ocean floor’ has been recreated by marine designers usaing state-of-the-art technologies.

With its extraordinary variety and number of animals, also, souvenir shops, cafes and even a playground for children, a day in Zoo it could well be a perfect choice for both adults and children.
