Ostankino is situated to the north of Moscow and it is one of surviving architectural monuments of the 18th century. It used to be a summer residence of the Sheremetiev’s family where their own private opera theatre is situated. The value of this estate is its unique architectural as a monument that is connected with the history of Russian and European theater art.

The complex was constructed over a period of four centuries, but the golden age of Ostankino started at the end of 18th century, when the estate owner became Count Sheremetiev. He ordered the moving of the theatre troupe from Kuskovo and had the palace-threatre built in Ostankino.

While at the Ostankino estate, you will witness the majestic columned-porticos and façade that the palace is decorated with. You will see the most attractive room of the palace transformed in the future into dancing hall. You will also be shown the hall where the Italian and Egyptian pavilions are which were constructed for guest-receptions and theatre performances. At the present moment, this hall is used for concerts and old operas.

Everything in Ostankino is beautiful and yet quite simple at the same time. You will note that interior decorations are wooden and only imitate bronze and marble. Still everything is decorated to artistic perfection. You will enter the unique building of the Ostankino Theater that shows off its18th-century interior including the stage itself, the auditorium, make-up rooms and engine-room equipment. The acoustics in Ostankino hall is considered to be the best in Moscow.

It is also famous for the Trinity Life Church which boasts a 17th century iconostasis and is, perhaps, the oldest monument on the grounds of Ostankino.

As you walk round, you will see the collection of ancient Russian icons and wooden sculpture started in the latter half of the 15th century and still being collected right up to the beginning of the 20th century, with valuable furniture items collected from the end of the 14th century until the 19th century. These collections of paintings and graphics were commissioned for the palace. The items of lighting should also be noted as they were made as early as the second part of the 15th century, and continued to be acquired until the beginning of the 20th century.

Every year the Sheremetyev Seasons festival takes place at Ostankino Museum-Estate. The aim of the festival is to present to the old opera masterpieces.
