The gallery was owned by Pavel Pretyakov – a rich Moscow merchant and textile mill owner – who was very fond of the arts and started collecting art works during the 1850s. His first purchase consisted only of two pictures, but over the course forty years, he collected numerous works of Russian artists. Ultimately, they became known, today, as the The National Museum of Russian Fine Art, or, the State Tretyakov Gallery.

The gallery building façade is in a form of Russian terem (Eng. tower-chamber). The designer was well-known artist V. Vasnetsov. The lovely view becomes visible when you go on tour of the Tretyakov gallery. The doors of the museum are open for everyone who wishes to see its huge exhibition covering the early Middle-ages to the present time. Here all tastes are likely to be satisfied.
